House of Today is a non-profit organization, committed to cultivating a sustainable design ecosystem in Lebanon, that transcends international borders. For over a decade, the organization’s overarching aim is to strengthen dialogues in the design world, expanding the reach of contemporary Lebanese designers and their creative processes, through mentoring and educating, curating collections and nurturing connections.
Based in Beirut, documentary filmmaker and ceramist Zeina Aboul-Hosn contrasts her work in film with exploring the process of creating ceramics. She discovered ceramics after moving back to Beirut from London 10 years ago. From news rooms, war zones, and refugee crises, her attention shifted to the pottery studio. From the start of her work in ceramics, she was drawn to the touch and color of Lebanese clay, which she uses exclusively in her work. Her exploration of Lebanese clay has pushed the boundaries of this material, creating pieces of a special character, generosity, and presence.
Her first foray into the world of art and design came in 2016 through the House of Today platform, where her ‘Moonshine’ bottle was part of the House of Today ‘Jungle Protocol’ exhibition. After the August 2020 blast that rocked Beirut, her ‘Together’ project was part of the exhibition to re-launch Tanit Gallery in Beirut. Her more playful and dreamy side can be seen in her latest creations: a series of wall mounted spheres that were part of the collective exhibition ‘DEAR MOON’, at Zalfa Halabi Art Gallery in Beirut. Meanwhile she continues her filmmaking work, focusing on film editing, and cutting unique award-winning feature films and documentaries from the Arab world.
