Lebanon suffers from severe power cuts. No matter the amplitude of the debate, the government remains hopeless in finding a solution. In a country where most initiatives (good or bad) come from the private sector, progress is localized and starts with a bottom-up approach. With more than 300 days of sun per year, solar energy is a highly relevant resource within this context.
The SOLAR LANTERN is a portable lamp that operates without electric power. It stores solar energy during the day and releases it automatically when it’s dark. The lamp simply needs to be in direct sunlight for several hours during the day to light up to 8 hours in the dark.
The jar is made out of blown glass by one of the last remaining Lebanese glass blowers from the southern village of Sarafand. The walnut lid has a built in concealed photovoltaic cell, and an ON-OFF switch on its underside.
