Azza Mahmassani is a surface designer that explores the multiple possibilities of decorative arts drawing on the different canvases of her experiences.
A graduate of Columbia University, she began her career in finance, working in New York, London and Paris for more than six years. Hungry for creativity, she decided to trigger an entirely new professional journey by embracing her artistic side and attending the Ecole d’Art Mural de Versailles in 2010.
A year later, Azza founded Bowya, a decorative arts studio based in Beirut. Combining traditional and modern mural painting techniques, her designs have dressed-up the walls of a number homes and restaurants with unique textures that often give a gently interlaced, woven fabric feel.
Dedicated to broadening the scope of her work, Azza is currently creating a collection of luxury wallpapers that capture her distinct brush stroke and handcrafted style.
Gilles Khoury & Cynthia Merhej
Cynthia Merhej is a visual artist who explores the fine line between the real and the imaginary. Working across different disciplines and mediums, she draws from diverse historical and cultural influences to create humorous and surreal narratives. Currently based in Beirut, she graduated from Central Saint Martins and from the Royal College of Art in Visual Communication.
Gilles Khoury is an author, journalist, and photographer. Originally trained as a computer and communication engineer at the American University of Beirut, he pursued his passion of writing upon graduation and never looked back. For him, the world is a giant candy store where colors, tastes and textures never seize to inspire him. Gilles is currently working as a photographer and journalist for L’Officiel Levant, NOUN and L’Orient Le Jour.
Today, Rami Dalle has interest in compiling, gleaning, and collecting found objects. In his work, reference to the old is sometimes signaled through subject, medium and technique. He runs a workshop where his daily research on Victorian crafts and folk practices mirrors his skills and curiosities in often-intricate handworks. Usually experimental, his work connects with the audience as a stimulant to relocate forgotten objects and resuscitate numb senses.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, Rouba spent a number of years in the city honing her design skills and gaining experience throughout the many facets of the creative industry. Passionate about paper and an entrepreneur at heart, she decided to head to Beirut in 2010 to set up Choux à la Crème – her boutique design, stationery and paper goods studio. A true labor of love, her signature letterpress pieces and whimsical designs soon gained a cult following and can now be found all over the globe. What began as a capsule stationery collection has grown into a cohesive brand with a recognizable aesthetic, always pushing the limits of paper as a medium.
Tala Hajjar, completed her Fashion Design and Marketing studies between London, Paris and Beirut. She then worked as PR and Marketing Manager in various fashion and jewelry houses. In 2008, Tala co-founded with designer Rabih Kayrouz, 'STARCH foundation', a non-profit organization that helps launch Lebanese emerging designers.
